Traffic space is pubic space
Public space is essential to a vital, inclusive society and resilient cities. But how can we create more of it in our densely packed cities? The solution is just on the street: There’s a vast amount of space that can be reclaimed by transforming areas that are today still dominated by cars into truly public spaces. To do so, we have to work toward a better balance between modes of transport and urban life: that means more space for pedestrians and cyclists, less space for motorized transport of persons and goods.
Traffic Space is Public Space isn’t just another book on urban planning principles. It won’t give you a rigid set of rules. But it will introduce you to approaches and strategies that are essential to trigger a change, such as creating connections, the participative process, the revitalization of the local economy, space sharing, the metabolism and a simple aesthetic. Packed with inspiring projects from all over the world, including some from the authors own urbanism and design firm, Artgineering, Traffic Space is Public Space offers forward-looking insights into how we can increase the quality of space and life in in our cities.
